The Coronation of Poppea
Time Out London : Mar 14th, 2011
Sat May 14 King’s Head Theatre, 115 Upper St, London, N1 1QN
OperaUpClose presents Monteverdi’s 1643 tale of the triumphant adultery between Poppea and Roman Emperor Nero, which gets a radical treatment under Mark Ravenhill’s directorial debut for the company and Alex Silverman’s new jazz-inspired orchestration. The cast includes Rebecca Caine (Ottavia), Tom Lowe (Arnalta), Jassy Husk (Drusilla), Jessica Walker (Nero), David Sheppard (Ottone), Zoë Bonner (Poppea), Adam Kowalczyk (Liberto/Soldier) and Marcin Gesla (Seneca). In sympathy with early Baroque singers, who could take the liberty to replace or add an aria more suited to their voice, or more to their liking, Michael Nyman has written an intervention aria, which precedes the exquisite finale duet, ‘Pur ti miro’. The designer is Katie Bellman.
