Concert starts at 15.00. Michael Nyman is taking part in a concert in support of the charity PAPYRUS (prevention of teenage suicide). He’s appearing at the invitation of Andy Findon, a long time member of the Michael Nyman Band, whose brother committed suicide in 1969, aged 15. Gary Findon was the subject of a BBC2 programme presented by his schoolfriend, Michael Portillo, who is introducing the concert. Apart from Michael’s music, included in the programme are works composed by Gary, which lay undiscovered until the making and researching of the programme. A suite of songs based on Celan's minimalist and exacting poetry in an evening including extracts of Michael Nyman's films about Auschwitz set to a live score and readings of Paul Celan's poetry by a range of writers and actors who have been inspired by his work.
Michael Nyman is an acclaimed English composer of minimalist music, pianist, librettist and musicologist, well known to the general public for his many award-winning movie scores written during his lengthy collaboration with the filmmaker Peter Greenaway, and his multi-platinum soundtrack album to Jane Campion’s The Piano. His operas include The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Facing Goya, and Sparkie: Cage and Beyond. He has also written concerti, string quartets, and other chamber works, many for his Michael Nyman Band, with and without whom he tours as a performing pianist. Michael Nyman is also a video filmmaker, and his work has been extensively exhibited, including at the Tate Modern, the Reina Sophia Museum, and MoMA. Distractions is a series of video works shot in various parts of the world documenting capsules of everyday life, living cultures, and forgotten traditions in a diaristic study of modern-day life, accompanied by Nyman’s soundtrack. Festival Weekender opens with Michael Nyman World Premiere, as part of London 2012 Cultural Olympiad Celebrated British composer Michael Nyman (Jane Campion’s The Piano, Gattaca, The Draughtsman’s Contract) opens On Landguard Point’s Felixstowe Weekender on Friday 23rd September in Suffolk’s Spa Pavilion with the world premiere ‘On Landguard Point’ - a new soundtrack. On Landguard Point is also a series of live large-scale, public outdoor events and activities that will culminate in a major feature film which will be premiered across the UK in 2012. It has been created by Pacitti Company as part of Artists taking the lead — a project at the heart of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad funded by Arts Council England. Michael Nyman and the Michael Nyman band perform the World Premiere performance of ‘On Landguard Point’ with guest soprano Marie Angel at the historic Spa Pavilion, on Friday 23rd September 2011, 7:30pm. This is a new musical work which is the soundtrack to the On Landguard Point film, commissioned by Pacitti Company and with original texts by Robert Pacitti and Sheila Ghelani. This special evening of film and music will begin with Nyman revisiting some of his acclaimed scores for Peter Greenaway’s films including The Draughtsman’s Contract, Drowning by Numbers and Prospero’s Books.
